Police Sciences Program

Graduates from this program will possess the skills required to perform competitively throughout he recruitment process for positions in law enforcement: RCMP, Corrections Canada, Canada Customs/Immigration, Natural Resources, and Community Policing Organizations. Graduates will also possess the skills necessary for careers in all areas of the security service industry, private and public sector investigations, and they will also have skills leading to job opportunities in the Emergency Care and Rescue services.
Program Courses

Lifestyles & Personal Fitness
Students will be expected to participate in a physical fitness-training regimen sufficient to pass the Police Officers Physical Aptitude Test. Lifestyle issues will be examined pertaining to shift work, diet, stress management, marital discord, and substance abuse.

Police Procedures
The students will become familiar with the history and development of policing in Canada, general police work and enforcement of laws, differences between municipal/provincial/federal laws, drug enforcement, commercial crime, powers of arrest, Ethical Discretion I and Evidence I.

Communications for Law and Justice I & II
The students will review English grammar, punctuation, effective writing and proofreading skills. These skills will be transferred to police writing (memos, letters, police notebooks, Crown briefs, public reports, and GORs), oral reporting, and resume writing. Students will create, format, and keyboard these documents using MS Office software applications such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Internet research. Speed requirement on alphabetic keyboard of 30 wpm and 150 noupm on a numeric keyboard.

Lifestyle Management/ Cultural Awareness
Students will learn about multi-cultural relations, human dignity, coping strategies in stress and conflict management, substance abuse, personal and professional development, community involvement, and personalized fitness (Self Defense I and II). Students will be expected to participate in physical training sufficient to pass the Police Officer's Physical Aptitude Test.

Criminology
Topics covered range from forensics, fingerprint and latent prints, violent crime cycle, mock crime scene, crime scene search and recording, interviews and interrogations, criminal behaviour, logic and problem solving.

Criminal Investigations
In this course, students will focus on the principals and sequences of investigations, witness and suspect interview techniques, witness/suspect statements, false confessions, and surveillance techniques. Ethical Discretion 2 and Evidence 2 are also covered.

Canadian Criminal Justice System
This course covers such topics as the Canadian Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights, Criminal and Civil law, police powers, court procedures, provincial and federal correctional procedures, contemporary social issues, and youth justice.

Outside Certifications
Students may have the opportunity to complete the following certifications while taking the Police Sciences program: First Aid Class A/CPR Class C, First Responder, Fire Arm Safety for Non-restricted and Restricted Weapons, Security Officer, Fire Investigation, and Confined Space Rescue.
